SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR MISSISSIPPI CROW MAGAZINE:
HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU? - Email: mississippicrow@msn.com
WHAT IS YOUR PUBLISHING SCHEDULE? Our schedule varies and is dependent upon the flow of material we receive and the outside demands of other projects. Issue 6 is scheduled for Summer, 2008. Issue 7 release date is undetermined. Once we have chosen your material for publication, we’ll notify you which issue/s you are scheduled to appear in. Occasionally we must move material up or hold it back an issue. If that happens to your submission, we will notify you.
MAY I SEE A SAMPLE ISSUE? - Yes. For a free ebook of a past issue, email the editor at mississippicrow@msn.com and make your request for a sample past issue ebook.
DO YOU ACCEPT UNSOLICITED SUBMISSIONS? Yes, we are now accepting submissions for upcoming issues. We are interested in original artwork, cartoons, photography, essays, short stories, poetry and articles. We especially want material on writing and the writing life, but also like food & garden articles, outdoors, travel, leisure activities. SHORT STORIES can be on any subject. Word count should be between 250 to 1000 words in length, but space is limited and shorter pieces will stand a better chance of getting published. We like unusual stories (even odd or quirky) with a twist at the end and we love flash fiction. Surprise us! Don't let your story trail off as if it were written as an exercise for a writing class--we are not interested in flawlessly written "snapshots in time". POETRY: We prefer free verse that is unique and fresh, alliteration is good, powerful and edgy is good - but if it's full of cliches, preachy and predictable we will be less interested. Romantic love is often overdone--go easy on it. Poems dedicated to one person that only you know, won't get read. Rhyming poetry is best for humorous pieces.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY WORK HAS BEEN CHOSEN OR NOT? Our response time has typically been less than 30 days, but can be as long as 90 days, especially in the summer months. If we accept your material, you will recieve a link to a PDF preliminary copy of the issue you are appearing in. It is important that you review it and notify us of any changes that need to be made at that time.
WHAT IS YOUR POLICY REGARDING CONTENT, I.E.SUBJECT MATTER AND PROFANITY? We don't have hard and fast rules, but we do want our magazine to be family friendly. For the most part, the tone of our magazine leans toward the lighter side. We're not prudes, and we love a writer that can bring a certain edge into his/her work, but profanity simply for the shock value is not what we are looking for. We DO like odd, quirky pieces, something that will raise an eyebrow or make the reader wonder what's going on in the head of the person who wrote it. We can say with certainty that using the Lord's name in vain will get your piece rejected. With regard to sexual content--nothing too dark or deranged. If you are in doubt, query.
HOW SHOULD I SEND MY SUBMISSIONS? Email submissions are preferred and should be sent to: MississippiCrow@msn.com. Submissions MUST include your full name and postal mailing address. Please DO NOT send a submission in the body of the email, use an attachment in WORD or Publisher. Accepted material will receive a response within one to three months. Writers submitting via email accept and understand that they will not receive an editor’s proof (we copy and paste from your document). All submissions indicate permission to publish. We reserve the right to remove from our publication line up, any previously accepted material for any reason. Typically we give you a 2-issue range (because of how we "fit" material into our issues). This takes additional time, space and planning--and sometimes necessitates moving work from one issue to the next.
DO YOU ACCEPT ARTWORK OR CARTOONS? Yes, we welcome artwork and cartoons in a variety of styles and formats, both color and black and white. Computer generated artwork is accepted also. We reserve the back cover and some inside pages to feature artists, photographers and some poems in full color. We also use color artwork and photography on our covers. Please contact the editor to determine the proper format to use: MississippiCrow@msn.com.
HOW DO YOU PAY ME FOR MY WORK? You will receive 1 free PDF E-book copy of the issue in which your work appears. We will also publish in the magazine, a listing of your website if you have one (Please note: it is YOUR responsibility to tell us that you have a website and want it listed). If you would like print copies of an issue in which your work appears, go to the "Get Copies" tab and follow the link provided (all issues, past and present, are carried in our bookstore). EXCEPTION: If your work is chosen to appear on our front or back covers (or in our centerfold), you will receive a print copy of that issue.
CAN I SUBSCRIBE OR BUY COPIES? We do not take formal subscriptions, but all issues are available for purchase individually. Links to purchase them can be found on the "Get Copies" tab at this website, or you can go directly to our bookstore at: http://stores.lulu.com/RiverMuse.
DO YOU ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS? No.
DO YOU ACCEPT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED MATERIAL? Only occasionally. Please query before submitting.
COMMENTS: We strictly require that all submissions be the original work of the contributing authors and accept no responsibility for plagiarism on the part of any contributor. All prices, policies and fees are subject to change without notice. We work with a six to eight-month lead time for strongly seasonal material. Send Christmas and blizzard material 6 to 8 month in advance, summer material in December and January and so on. Copyright reverts to the individual authors upon publication.
